Terrace will be closed from 5-8 PM, so consider this a "walk-to" event. There is
no charge for the candy, treats or tour.Visitors are welcome to take photos to
share the memory of their visit with family and friends. After the event, I hope
many will send me their photos and you-tube links
[email protected]@Highlights include separate TREAT Delivery Stations
for:"Full-sized" Candy Bars, Tootsie Minis, Juice Hugs & Fresh Fruit.Volunteer
actors will be on hand to scare visitors through sets that include:Harry
Potter's Horrible Chamber (with 60' Basilisk), a Cemetery, CSI Murder
Investigation, Dooley’s Deadly Diner, the Rogue’s Gallery, the Owl
Passage, a Surgery, the Pirate Ship, the Pumpkin Patch and Skeleton's Haunted
House.Feel free to direct neighborhood Trick or Treaters our way.If you do not
know what we do, please check out the links at the end of this message. This
event is sponsored by the Squirrel Hill Town Watch and Police Mini Station. From
5-8 PM tonight, the police will close the streets from 4600-4699 Springfield
and from 900-1099 S. Farragut. No cars will be permitted to drive in or out
during these hours. The Police and UCD will be providing uniformed Ambassadors
and Security.@We do not want to pull anyone from their own porch, but if you
know anyone who’d like to be part of either of the fun groups that are
decorating now, and delivering candy starting at 5 PM. Info follows. Since this
event is sponsored by the Squirrel Hill Town Watch and Mini-Station, we can
provide certificates of Community Service hours for students.I am happy to live
in a safe and happy neighborhood. I want to pay some of our good fortune
forward by keeping the tradition of Halloween generosity and fun
alive.Hurricane Sandy has provided some special challenges. We had all the big
decorations up and had a mini-event last Saturday for wheel chair bound
students of the HMS School. We took them all down, and are now rushing them all
back up. It helps me realize how lucky we are, in Philadelphia, to have been
spared serious harm from the storm.I feel very grateful to all those who make
donations and volunteer time to make this event so successful, year after
year.Cynthia Preston , our local "Queen of Halloween",tells me that this is the
19th year for the "Haunted Garden Tour", and the 15th that it will be held in
my side yard. She continues to work toward the success of this event. Even
though age and illness have her mostly housebound and on 24-7 oxygen, she has
coordinated the donation of Juice Hugs and Fresh Fruit and has arranged for the
18th District to close our streets and provide protection for the
Trick-or-Treaters.
I am only involved because of Cindy, who asked for my help.
It has been a very rewarding partnership.
I think this will be our last year, so if you’ve never been, this is
probably your last opportunity.I do not even know all of the good Volunteers
who worked in the first 4 years to establish this event, but I’d like to
send out Thank You to some of the folks who helped this year.Officer Mike Davis
of the 18th DISTRICTwho arranged the street closure and works every day to
insure the safety of our kids.UCDwho will supply ambassadors, security and
clean-up.Councilwoman Blackwell’s team, including Marty Cabry and John
Fenton who helped coordinate with Cyndy and UCD.Wayne Fleischman of
WAYNE’S GARAGEwho donated Treat Bags.Eric Kassab, of GOFFREDO PLUMBING,
who delivered a discarded toilet, as he does every year, so that the 60’
basilisk, sewed by CJ Kelly, can soar above the line.Guy Larenand Roger &
Vincent of GOLD STANDARD who each bought 200 Full-sized Candy Bars and
Batteries to run the FX machines. This year, Gold Standard is also donating a
vegan Chili to feed the volunteers. The Kelly-Airone family who donated 4,000
mini candies (as they do year-after-year).Jacob & Viviane Nachmiaswho donated
beach chairs for the Pirate Set.Mary Armstrongwho found and delivered a giant,
hairy spider.Jim Beck, who showed up after the storm and put up 5 of the big
balloons, establishing the scene boundaries for the decorators who follow. The
Dooley and Kocher families, who show up with energy, talent and brilliance, to
layer the sets for maximum impact. My husband, Larry Motyka, and kids, Mike and
Kate, and their friends, Sam Jordan, Matthew Freilich, Richard Pogue and Mia
Habby, who enable this madness and do a lot of the hauling and storage.Julia
Cranewho make giant pots of Soup or Chili to warm the volunteers.Yvette
Jiggetswho donated candy and made a tray of Ziti for the volunteers. Her
donations are in memory of her son Moses, an Eagle Scout, who volunteered at
the HHG, for several years, even when he was sick from the illness that killed
him. Many good neighbors including James Moran, Elaine Hughes-Jenson, and a few
anonymous donors have been dropping off treats and will help out tonight with
acting and treat distribution.Cynthia Miller of CAT CAREpromises to reprise the
critical role of WITCH that has been made so special in past years by Jeannette
Bennecelli, Carol Fritz and Robin Gresham-Chin.Some of my tenants and several
International Scholars, including Q, Bing, Ben and Ethan from China; Juan from
Argentina; Paul from Korea; and Tak from Japan and possibly others will be
learning about Halloween, by volunteering in our garden. One of my favorite
donations is the gift of dance, donated by the ZOMBIES of PHILLY THRILLER. They
promise to perform several sets in front of our home.Lastly, I need to thank
Father John Hand of St. Francis de Sales, and all of my neighbors who tolerate
and even embrace the madness that we call Halloween.I know I am forgetting
people who have made valuable contributions. They have my thanks!!!I hope all
will understand the pressure to get this show on the road.If you are connected
to anyone who can still donate any treats or time, please forward this message.
I am even happy to give away things with logos on them. I think we have more
than enough decorations, unless you find something rare or fabulous.
We try to plan for 2,400 visitors.Volunteer opportunities are:Today, any amount
of time between now and 4 PM. This group will be the "Set Decorators" and will
help install decorations, set up the distribution tables and otherwise get the
Garden ready for the Halloween visitors. No special skill is required, but
experienced and talented Stage managers are welcome to develop themes and be
creative.This evening, from about 4:30 - 7:30 PM.Actors will distribute candy
and treat, and entertain the folks in the line waiting to enter the Haunted
Garden."Actors" must commit to at least 4:45-7:15 PM.We prefer volunteers in
costume and can loan some costume items. This year’s volunteers are
welcome to join in the "After-Party" at our home.We plan Lasagna, Chili, Hot
Soup, Sandwiches and beverages (including some beer and wine for those over
21).Volunteers should be done in time to enjoy any later parties on campus and
downtown that they might want to attend.Volunteers may also stop by tomorrow
during the day, to help gather up the more fragile or valuable sets, to return
them to storage.@For those who have not sure what we do for Halloween, here
