Hi, Everyone,
Many thanks to Patty Bulack for sending along these notes she took at our
monthly community/police meeting Thursday night at Calvary. Also, she invited
all to attend "Meet the Grassroots" event this Sunday, Nov. 18 at Studio 34,
4522 Baltimore Ave., from 4-6 pm. It is a welcome to the neighborhood extended
to everyone to meet representatives from many local businesses and
organizations. Iris Bloom will lead a self-defense workshop from 5-6 pm.
refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Patty at
[email protected].
Happy Thanksgiving.

Subject: From Det. Murray - 2 serious robberies early this morning, by the same
robbers . 42& Baltimore, 31&Walnut. OTHER POLICE WARNINGS ABOUT ROBBERIES,
PACKAGE THEFTS
Hello All,
Saw this earlier from Det. Murray Twitter acount, but didn't have time to get
this to you until now. I am quite concerned that it was violent in nature,
although no one was seriously injured. Our thoughts are with the victims,
hoping that they will make a speedy recovery from these traumatic events.
Please avail yourselves of escort services. 215 898-WALK is 24 hours.
Also, went to the PSA 3 Meeting at Calvary last night, and got updated by Sgt.
Washington who is now working in our area.
PLEASE BE AWARE: Cellphone robberies are on the rise, and expected to increase
as the holidays approach. Especially iPhones are vulnerable. There is even a
street name for it : "apple picking". And robbers are targeting WHITE FEMALES,
both college age, and also YOUNG MOTHERS WITH THEIR CHILDREN. So please don't
make yourselves easy targets by using your phones on the street especially if
you may be distracted by your children or otherwise. Holding a cellphone in
your hand, especially lighted at night, is like waving hundreds of dollars
around. The robbers can easily sell it to someone they know, or take it
somewhere and unlock it, which wipes out any tracing abilities.
PLEASE PLEASE DON'T USE YOUR PHONES ON THE STREET - and please be aware that
the approaching holidays historically means an increase in criminal activity.
in our neighborhood.
Package theft: Sgt. Washington also wanted us to know that he expects package
theft to rise, since there will be such an increase in traffic. They made one
arrest, but they know there is still someone out there. Please make
arrangements for your packages to have to be signed for. We have all been
discussing other methods - please take this seriously and make some kind of
arrangements for yourself. Either having them delivered at the offices of
either UPS or Fed Ex, or a lockbox, or another location that you know will be
secure such as your workplace. And any other ideas we figure out!
I am happy to have made the acquaintance of Sgt. Washington, and look forward
to working with him more closely. Also met a supervisor of the UCD Bike escort
team, Mr. Ahn, nd he will also be extremely helpful. We have a great team on
our side, but they can't do it all..... we need to be proactive and be the
eyes and ears that they can't - police officer staffing is down as well, which
makes it even more important for us to be alert and active, and thinking about
this stuff together. Call 911 if you see any suspicious activity, and educate
yourselves about what that looks like... all stuff we've been talking about
for quite some time now. Keep informing one another about what you see. I now
have Sgt. Washington to call on, and Mr. Ahn and Officer Seaman, who was also
there. So grateful for them all.
Yours,
Patty
