Hello All,
Looking for a head count, for tonight and for Oct. 30th. Just would
be helpful to us to know what to expect. If you haven't RSVP'd yet,
but are planning to come please let me know ([email protected]).
With the recent gunpoint robbery and sexual assault at 50th and
Hazel Monday morning, there might be a little more urgency about
this for some of you, and I want to make sure you are aware that
this is available to help address that for you.
Description below -
Yours,
Patty
Iris Bloom and I have been discussing having these sessions for
awhile now - it makes sense to give us all more tools to feel and
be safer. Please come to one or both of these sessions, in space
generously donated by Studio34, on Wed. Oct. 16 and Wed. Oct. 30,
from 6 to 7:45 pm. We put together a description which I've
included below. Iris gave us some of this information at 48th
Street Neighbors' very first meeting, and we all found it to be very
helpful. Here is our chance to get a more full-blown version.
I am looking for a videographer to record it for us, so that we can
post it and make it available to more folks. If anyone would like
to volunteer for that, I would appreciate it!
Hope to see you at one of these sessions!
Yours,
Patty

The teacher, Iris Marie Bloom, studied with Amulis Women's Self-
Defense; learned karate, aikido, and other martial arts; and founded
WAVE -- Women's Anti-Violence Education -- which taught at least
10,000 students over a 10 year span before becoming part of Women In
Transition.
Although developed for women, the information is useful for men as
well.
People of all ages, shapes, sizes, and physical abilities can learn:
* Skills and techniques to help you avoid, deter and resist assault
* Practice giving up "mugger money" as one way to stay safer
* A fierce yell -- in case it's needed!
* Strong stance, practical assessment of danger, and a "don't mess
with me" attitude
* Effective and practical tools for physical, verbal and emotional
safety, assertiveness and self-defense
These workshops are open to people of all races, backgrounds, income
levels, gender identities and sexual orientations!
Our purpose is to provide empowering educational programs which help
to eliminate violence, heal its effects, and build safer, more
joyous communities.
