The excuse being given by so many uncaring (esp. the SERIOUSLY large & ‘incorporated') meat growers, is that the gestation crate is "to protect the piglets from being crushed by the mother" WHICH, in fact, is absurdly FALSE.
Farmers are well aware that pretty much only their ‘keepers’ use of the crates really ever will tend to cause this untoward event, as the mothers in their crippling crates, will sometimes start to spasm and struggle in half-sleeping terror fits to try to un-cramp dreadful pains in their swollen constricted joints and (frequently locked up tetanied) muscles… Avaricious meat producers and often their very lowly paid workers, seem like they don't care a whole lot about the swollen and sore pigs - or their NOW ACTUALLY - very poorly nursed piglets - they may only see ‘products' / ‘units' / $$$MONEY!! [the crates make suckling MORE difficult… if you don’t believe it, look for videos r/t this] The meat gets VERY fatty, they celebrate that MUCH less space is being used, and the only real 'cost' is the hideous torment for the animals (and not just for pigs, but most animals raised as meat 'products') Very often the crate also causes terrible ulcers, infections, diseases and UNTIMELY DEATH (but 'hey, no loss, just put the body in the grinder and lets get 'er to market')!!! In fact, the situation decreases outputs according to sober observers but try getting Congress to re-regulate!! We truly NEED to BRING BACK the SMALL FARMS with their TRUE FAMILY VALUES displaying our MOST PRECIOUS traditions of AMERICAN MERCY and DEMOCRATIC UNION — and probably we NEED to start to “bust” or break up a bunch of the more immoral of the over-sized corporate ‘monstrosities’ (who fear ANY regulations basically)!!! OH, btw, Gov. Chris Christie’s FaceBook page is sprouting tons of newly UPSET New Jersey Republicans!!!
