Subject: [UCNeighbors] Zoning nonsense at Studio 34

tl;dr: The city has decided that if Studio 34 wants to keep having poetry readings, art shows and events (such as my wedding) they need a NIGHT CLUB LICENSE. Which has freaked out a lot of neighbors who got a notice that a nightclub has applied for a license are suddenly terrified (and up in arms) that Studio 34 plans to turn into studio 54 and have vowed to shut them down. The quiet and neighborly folks at Studio 34 could use some support at the zoning meeting. Please share.

Spruce Hill Zoning Committee Meeting
257 S. 45th St
Thurs, Apr 23 at 7:20p.m.
We believe that gathering joyously and positively is essential to creating supportive, healthy communities. We believe Studio 34 Yoga | Healing | Arts is an integral piece of our neighborhood; a place where people who might be very different from one another can connect in an atmosphere of Peace and Beauty. It is a place for individual and community health and wellness. We want to continue enjoying regular poetry slams, art shows like the annual Fun-A-Day show and Bike Part Art Show, intimate music shows with local artists, and much more. The people in this neighborhood have so much to offer one another, it is overwhelming. We need a show of support from the people who know how special and varied this neighborhood is, and see it reflected in Studio 34. We have a Zoning meeting coming up (THIS THURSDAY NIGHT at 7:20p.m.) to clear the path for a Special Assembly License, which would then allow us to resume the fundraisers, modern dance shows, teen talent shows, improv comedy shows, Lindy&Blues dance meetups, and other community gatherings we have been hosting for the last eight years.
There will be "opposition":
It may sound absurd to anyone who knows Studio 34 Yoga|Healing| Arts , but the only zoning that covers the many varied gatherings Studio 34 hosts is a Nightclub/Private Club/Banquet Hall Zoning designation. Studio 34 Yoga is not a nightclub, obviously. We want to continue the peaceful, respectful, affordable or free gatherings that have been a staple of the space since we opened eight years ago. Many nearby residents, however, are justifiably afraid that we are trying to open a nightclub, because that's what the zoning notice on the front door says! So they imagine lots of loud music, alcohol, and dance parties that go until 2 in the morning. They deserve to feel good and unafraid about what is happening at Studio 34. So: We need people who know and love Studio 34 to be at the meeting and possibly say a few words about why it is an important, harmonious gathering place for our neighborhood. If you are able attend this important meeting, we would be very grateful.
