No, - I've never had to use vga= with grub1, so the kernel is working fine. I also tried removing gfxpayload and it didn't make any difference (I added that to see if it would fix the inability to switch in the first place).
Strangely, I *could* get to the tty consoles from Jaunty if I booted with grub2, but not with Karmic. Something changed recently that stops vga mode working properly with grub2 - not in the kernel, though, because I'm running the same kernel in both. Also, I can't boot into recovery mode from either Jaunty or Karmic using grub2. I get the first two lines where it says it's booting the kernel image, and then nothing further.
