One hack is to rename the file /usr/lib/purple-2/showoffline.so to something else (I have renamed it to safe.showoffline.so). In this case, it doesn't show up the alert everytime Pidgin starts but only when you try to enable the plugin from the plugins list. (A proper fix would be nice though)
