What if you 1. Browse with Nautilus to the samba share with all the audio files 2. Launch Audacious2 3. Drag n' drop audio files to playlist. 4. Play them.
This worked for me with Karmic and Audacious 2.1. Can you reproduce this? Confirming though that network/samba/whatever icon is missing from the open file dialog. One could expect to be able to browse network from the that dialog.
