Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Noticed this corrupt screen (quite beautiful though!) when shutting down
gdm. I've been seeing a lot of different corrupt screens when vt
switching, logging in and out, restarting gdm, etc. This is just one
example.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset
Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2e02] (r
ev 03)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics
Controller [8086:2e02]

00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset DRAM Controller
[8086:2e00] (rev 03)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset DRAM Controller
[8086:2e00]

No obvious errors in Xorg.0.log. Saw this in :0.log:

error setting MTRR (base = 0xd0000000, size = 0x10000000, type = 1)
Invalid argument (22)

Despite showing a corrupted screen, I notice that X is not running, so I
wonder if the gdm shutdown is simply leaving me at the wrong vt? I can
restart X okay

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
     Importance: High
         Status: Triaged
