dpkg -l menu | tail -1 gives:
un menu <none>

This is clearly the cause of the problem and I thought that this had
already been stated above. However, I can't see it there so it is just
as well you said! May be I am recalling the package suggestion when
running the command from the command line. Anyhow, the solution that
appears to be prefered is to replace the reference to su-to-root with
the more usual gksu.
