I'm on 8.10, 64-bit, with Nvidia drivers. My issue seems the same as everyone else above, with VC reporting "X11 request 2.0 failed with error code" when running an AVI file that I KNOW works fine as I played in VLC under Ubunut 8.04.
I just had a minor victory. In VLC prefs, I just clicked on interface type of Native, and unchecked Integrate Video in Interface. The AVI worked! Went into fullscreen and back, no issues. I then tried pausing the video, went into prefs and re-checked Integrate Video in Interface to see if this was the problem, but nothign seemed to change. Next, I exited VLC, restarted it, changed the prefs to Native interface with Integrated Video in interface. Instant Exit! Try again - restart VLC, prefs = Native with NO integrated video in interface. Video plays fine. Could the Integrated Video in Interface be the issue? Please try, and post your results. If this is the issue, would this be a VLC problem rather than Ubuntu?
