That is exactly how I did it. My audiophile system gets wired. The study system, with $200 speakers instead of $3000 speakers, get wireless and compressed data. Not very compressed, but not audiophile quality. Works well. And the server does all the work transparently. Even sync'ing between them works well (not perfectly, but very usably). Its quiet usable now, since I replaced my P2-500 system with a much more modern one, so that the transcoding is not a major load.
