I continued to play around with debug flags, focusing on the iTunes interaction. A "tail -f /tmp/slimserver.log" with d_iTunes flag set revealed that my iTunes XML file was constantly being rescanned.
I set the iTunes Reload Interval to "0" (do not perform auto reloads). I also went to iTunes and "unselected" all my comedy and audio-books. This cut the number of tracks in the iTunes library down from about 33,000 to 16,000 (I have a number of unabridged audio books) and reduces the time for a rescan.
