I get to the point where I do the
chmod 755 /etc/init.d/slimserver
bit after creating and cut&paste to the pref file.
However, I get the error
chmod: cannot access `/etc/init.d/slimserver': No such file or
directory

Do you know whether your distro is based on any of the mainstream distributions like debian or redhat? You'll need a startup script which can slightly differ from system to system. Have a look at the wiki's page about these.
