I should also add, that mplayer was complaining about needing to set
max-user-freq=1024, as such:

Try adding "echo 1024 > /proc/sys/dev/rtc/max-user-freq" to your system
startup scripts.

So I also typed:

sysctl -w dev.rtc.max-user-freq=1024

This did not seem to help, in fact it may have made it worse (meaning
less reliable, unable to play for more than a minute or two).

I also tried to change the slimserver-convert.conf cache sizes in the
aforementioned from 128 to 256, which did not help.

Any recommendations on what's best to do about the log error
suggestions:

Compiled with buggy version of gcc using advanced optimizations [try
another rpm? or compile?]

Your system is overclocked [system is NOT]

Bug in LAME encoding [boing]
