Yes, slimserver finds the player and the player works fine. And I can control it from the slimserver web interface overmy LAN or the internet. That all works just fine. What I can't do is use Windows Media Player or Winamp to get streaming audio so I can listen to the music wherever I am. I should be able to use a URL (I'm using http://my_machine_IP:9000/stream.mp3) and hear it. Instead, WMP connects but nothing comes out and eventually it complains about some network error. Do I need icecast to do this? I thought slimserver could do it.
