Well, I couldn't go to bed without finding out whether I could fix it by a simple command prompt instruction ;)
u'rpmi mplayer' downloaded mplayer amd 8 dependant files, installed itself and now SS works with Alien BBC :) I'll go to bed now, before I get tempted to break it again by trying to install a fixed mplayer to cure the 'garbling' problem ;) Once again, thanks for your help!
