It would be nice if I could get squeezeslave to start automatically and
not require an open terminal window whiile it was running. Has anyone
created an init.d style script for it? I searched the forums, but
didn't see anything on this.

I attempted to make one, but my lack of skill in this area didn't serve
me well. Basically, I copied squeezeslave to /usr/sbin, then copied and
modified the "reboot" script in init.d to call squeezeslave. Then, I
made a link to the script in rc2.d (which seems to be the default
runlevel for Ubuntu as specified in inittab). This didn't work, but I
thought I'd mention it to show that I at least tried before coming to
the forum and saying "hey - someone make a script"

It would be nice to have one that takes stop, start, and restart
commands like the other scripts in init.d. Something that writes
messages to a log and does that ...... [OK] thing would be extra
sweet.

I'm not adverse to giving it another try if someone knows a script
that's fairly barebones and would be easy to modify. I tried looking
into the apache and mysql startup scripts but they seemed to be more
complex than I need.
