Is this by any chance an NTFS formatted external hard drive?

If so, what does the output of "mount" look like?

I'm not sure what Kubuntu does but on my FC5 box NTFS drives are mounted
as root and the default mode is 700 so only the owner can see the files.

Or can you see the files if you browse to the disk from the KDE explorer
 (or whatever)?
