I don't have a Kuro, but I would never claim that my LinkStation is silent, and the hardware is identical. Quiet, yes. But you can definitely hear the fan from across a small room, and you can hear when it's reading and writing. There are various hacks and mods to make it quieter, but I just put it where the sounds won't bother anyone. I just wish it had wake-on-LAN.
