What are X and putty?
X is the X Window system, a graphical user interface for Linux/Unix. Often there's talk about running server without X, which means you don't install any windowing system. Just the naked command line. To access that command line over the network, you need a telnet or better SSH client. Putty is about the most popular SSH client program for Windows.
