Since you don't have a memlock limit set, it does sound like you really are running out of memory during the scan. 60,000 tracks is a lot, so it's not terribly surprising. The memory usage you show when the server isn't scanning looks ok. Try running 'free' when you're doing a scan and see if physical memory is exhausted (and not by cache).
