I'd propose you get familiar with the frugal install. It's the easiest to update once you want to update the SlimCD.
and I'm going to start my tries with SlimCD. If a major update would come soon, I would wait for that before I started.
If you're on 1.7 then there won't be a _major_ update for a while. Next major new build (2.0) won't be out before 6.5 is getting stable.
