The bad news is I can't seem to get the /etc/init.d/slimserver script
to work. I followed the Debian instructions here for installation and
start up scripts here
"http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DebianStartupScript3";

Check permissions on /etc/slimserver* (or remove them alltogether). The newly created slimserver user does need read/write access to these or it will fail. "chown slimserver:slimserver" (or whatever that user is called) should fix this.
