I was planning to just add perl support to FreeNAS and to install slimserver to one of the disks configured by FreeNAS. However, FreeNAS wouldn't be able to start any service from the external disks. So, that means installing slimserver on the RAM disk, which means it the boot image gets much bigger, and there are persistence problems, i.e. copying settings/DB etc. to persistent storage at shutdown. I need to revisit the whole thing and work out whether or not it's really feasible, or whether it would be easier to simply rip the GUI code and port it to a DSL box!
