Ok. I'm going to answer my own question. I found out what was behind the "no account" problem. The last line in the /etc/passwd file (starting with "slimserver") ends with something like /sbin/nologin after installing 6.3, but ends with /bin/bash after installing 6.2. So I reinstalled 6.3 and edited the passwd file so that the last line ended with /bin/bash. This time I was able to start the slimserver and 6.3 appears to now work. I have no clue as to why this is different in 6.3 vs. 6.2, but it worked.
