as a follow up, this is what I did: -logged in as gian -mkdir test -cd test -touch testfile -recorded permission values of directory (755) and file (644) -edited smb.conf and changed create mask value to 644 and dir mask to 755 -rescan music folder -NOW SS shows the albums
