I'm perfectly happy (and kinda stuck) with using V6.2.2 and unless you want to start having to build packages, installing openlink, etc., you're going to be stuck there too... I'm running on an HG300 but used to run on an H160 with acceptable results albeit a bit slower...
I don't think you'd be able to run V6.5/V7 on the LS1 but you _should_ be able to run V6.3.x (I can't get a running dev platform on my HG but you might... ;-) Good luck, Daniel P.S.
