The HD-H250LAN uses a MIPS processor. A comparison chart is available

In general, the linkstationwiki.net site is a great resource, including
the forum. It's a good one to get to know if you're going (or thinking
of going) the LS route.

If you follow the directions you won't turn it into a doorstop. But
you're right that you bear all the risk, and if you think you're in
over your head then you're right to think twice. If you'd rather not
take the risk, you should consider (a) getting a different NAS with
vendor support for slimserver (eg, Infrant or QNAP), or (b) having
someone else hack the LinkStation for you. I think Robin Bowes, who
frequents these forums, has done long-distance installations of
slimserver on LinkStations for a small fee.
