OK, I've been doing some research, and it seems to me that 'libyaml-syck-perl_0.67-1_amd64.deb' being missing is more of a problem with Ubuntu than a problem with the Slimserver package (based on my limited technical knowlege and a bit of Googling).
So, having dug around a bit, 'libyaml-syck-perl_0.67-1_amd64.deb' is available in the debian unstable repositories. So, I added the following repository to the Synaptic package manager: deb http://ftp.ch.debian.org/debian sid main non-free contrib Then, following the instructions here (http://moonbase.rydia.net/mental/blog/life/mixing-ubuntu-and-debian.html) I obtained the public key for the Debian repository. My actual steps were as follows: wget http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key2006.asc sudo gpg --import ziyi_key2006.asc sudo gpg --armor --export 2D230C5F | sudo apt-key add - Having done this I refreshed my repositories in Synaptic and received some kind of out-of-memory errors, which were pretty discouraging. So, almost ready to abandon for the night I did two things: 1) delete the Debian repository from Synaptic, and 2) delete the Debian key from Synaptic (via Settings -> Repositories -> Authentication). Now, just for fun, I have loaded up Synaptic one more time; searched for package 'slimserver'; and clicked on 'Apply'. Lo and behold, all package dependencies (including libyaml-syck-perl_0.67-1_amd64.deb) have been found, and I'm installing as I type. I admit that I don't understand what has happened here, so either my messing around with repositories and keys has solved this, or there is something going on behind the scenes that has fixed the problem. Either way, having now completed the installation and rebooted I now have Slimserver 6.5 installed & running on the AMD64 version of Ubuntu. Very odd, but I'm not complaining! I've posted this information in case anyone can learn from this and identify the real root cause & solution.
