I got it working after following:

1) Uninstalled the old v6.3
2) Installed the new v.6.5
3) followed the wiki page
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ExistingMySQLInstance
to use the existing mysql instance rather than the 
slimserver embedded one
4) open a console and then
cpan install Digest::SHA1
5) Depending on your perl situation you might need
to also do 
cpan install YAML::Syck 

6) after that the slimserver starts
and does it's thing. 
I initially use:
perl /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl --d_server --d_info
--d_import --d_sql --d_mysql

in order to see the full debug output.


7) This is the best slimserver version so far
and at least for a Suse user the least
problematic.
