I have been running and upgrading SlimServer from the ports collection
on FreeBSD for a couple years now and have to tell you that I've been
delighted with it. The port will make sure that all your dependencies
are taken care of and, of specific importance to the problem you're
having, will create a slimserver user and
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/slimserver script for you that will take care of
the permissions issue. I heartily endorse using the port, though I
should disclaim that I have upgraded my FreeBSD and so have only run
Slimserver 6.5 on FreeBSD 6.1 Release and can't attest to it on earlier
versions. I did run the Slimserver port on FreeBSD 5.4 early on though
and again have not had any substantial difficulty from then on.
