Not sure this is much help, but I'm trying currently to get kubuntu
(dapper) and slimserver 6.5 installed.

the file should be /etc/slimserver.conf

On my mandriva install it was owned by slimserver in group slimserver
and had permissions 644.

But when I set it like that I still get the error that the file is
unwritable. I'm running slimerserver.pl as a regular user (even with
permissions set to 664 and the user added to the slimserver group).

So the only way was for me to chmod 666 the file. Then the conf file
can be written to.

Don't like having the file world writable, but can't get any further
with it right now.
