I did a clean install of Ubuntu Server 6.06 on an old HP-eVectra with a new HD this weekend. Other than needing to partition the drive carefully to get the /boot files close enough to the start of the volume for the old BIOS, it was really quite straightforward. (The GRUB error I got when I first tried it was easy to research on the web, as was the workaround.)
I added used apt-get to sshd support so I could connect via command-line from my PC via putty, and set up samba while I was at it. Then I followed the directions on the slim devices wiki for the 6.5.0 debian install. The slowest step was copying the wav files from my linkstation -- everything else worked quickly and easily. It's been a long time since I touched UNIX, and this was really an extremely pleasant surprise.
