Yes, you could put Linux on such a box. However, I wouldn't recommend getting one of those machines. Power consumption will be high, and they're incredibly noisy - they're designed to site in machine rooms, not in your house! They're also designed for SCSI disks, i.e. they have SCSI back-planes and need proprietary Compaq SCSI disks (or at least, disk trays). You can't just throw IDE/SATA disk in them. Leave well alone would be my advice. You just don't need that sort of machine to run slimserver. Your existing Athlon is more than adequate.
