This is what I do.

This is my music library:

# ls -ld /mnt/media/music
drwxr-xr-x 10 robin robin 4096 Dec 10 22:01 /mnt/media/music

It's owned by me so I can copy new RIPS, edit tags, etc. but is
world-readable so slimserver can get to it.
