Another thing you can do is enabling SlimServer performance monitoring. 
Click on Help at the upper right side of the SS web page, then on
"Server & Network Health".  Then click on "Enable Performance
Monitoring".  Go back to the Home page and select "Browse by Music
Folder" (this was the operation that was taking a lot of time).

Then go back to the performance monitoring pages and check out the
results.  You might find some useful information to help diagnose your
problem.
