Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on too many things to predict.
I don't speak Debian, but I've been using assorted package managers for
a long time, and they only work so far.

The first time I installed slimserver, back in the 5.2 days, it was
click and go. I don't even remember which distro I was using, maybe an
early Fedora Core.

I switched to Mandrake, and it stayed easy. Then Mandrake changed their
name, and it got harder.

When I recently had to replace a trashed boot partition, I went to
Mandriva 2007 and all the easy package stuff failed.

It ended up being easier to just remove all the package stuff, get the
tarball and do it by hand. It wasn't really hard, but Mandriva in their
infinite wisdom stopped including critical perl modules, so I had
to use CPAN to get them, one at a time until I got the slimserver config
tool to be happy.

I don't even remember if I had to manually install MySql, it was a while
ago, altho I do have notes if anyone cares.

Get a shell, type
mysql
and see what it says.
and try
mysql mysql -u root
