Dear Stuart, Sorry to say, I'm not qualified to give you any help, but you are using the exact system I had in mind to use. (Same distro, USB hard drive, etc.) So even though I don't have the solution, I will be following your case closely for selfish reasons.
If it is a simply a permissions issue, I'm sure the Ubuntu forum would be a good resource. I am running a Debian Sarge install that is minimally functional. Rather, I am minimally functional in Linux (for now). I'm ready to make the jump to Ubuntu to rectify that. I posted in the beginners forum about using a USB hard drive as my music repository, and it worked for others (presumably using Windoze). While looking at some USB hard drives I got around to wondering what file system my prospective USB drive uses and I saw that it was FAT32. Is this a factor and are you able to read/write the drive with another application? Anyway, sorry I can't be more help, but I'm pulling for you.
