you should not run slimserver.pl as root, but best using
/etc/init.d/slimserver ("service start slimserver"). If you did try
running as root you probably have permissions issues on
/usr/local/slimserver (or wherever slimserver is installed). Did you
install using the .rpm or the tar file?
