I managed to solve it, as posted, but to answer your questions:

1. after installing (several times), I checked what users and groups
were available, and could only find the group "slimserver" with no
associated user (trying to create the user at this point is too late,
btw - have to delete the group, uninstall the package, tidy up any
unnecessary files etc. before trying again)

2. I checked /etc/passwd, no user unless I created it myself

3. I was logged in as my own user mostly (though towards the end I got
fed up and logged in as root) - but I usually "su -". When trying to
get things started: I was using
"service slimserver start" to start it, rather than
"/etc/init.d/slimserver start" - I didn't see the init.d thing
mentioned in any of the FAQs, install guides etc. that I found today.

4. the /tmp logfile seems to get deleted when you uninstall everything,
so I don't have a copy of it while it was failing; since I have it
running now, I could uninstall it and use yum to install it again and
see if the problem persists - I did check the log file several times
and didn't see anything useful that I could discern, other than lots of
perl errors complaining about null defaults (probably because it didn't
have a home directory) and messages about it failing to create
directories and files in "/".

thanks,

William
