I also use my own instance of MySQL (5.0.33 on Solaris 10) and had to use the [EMAIL PROTECTED] to get it to work.
Depending on which version of MySQL you are using, you may also run into another authentication problem which deals with the password format in MySQL. In this case follow the guide at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/old-client.html on using the old_password command.
