I had the same experience when I switched from CC to Ubuntu the other
week. The installation went fine but it just wouldn't boot. It took me
long time to realise that the distribution was compiled with PAE
support which my motherboard (which I believe is similar to yours)
didn't support. The solution was to download the "alternate"
installation disk. That worked for me. 

The reason I switched from CC was that I needed to host a few DNS
domains and I couldn't remove the 'dnsmasq' component (to replace it
with 'bind') without removing the entire network support from the
system which obviously wasn't what I wanted. CC is great as long as you
stay within the boundaries that they have designed. In my case those
boundaries were too restricting.
