Good point Josh, that's exactly what I was concerned about, but so far
the programs which depend on shared libraries work just fine (xmms,
totem, etc.)  Of course this could change in the future.

I looked into koen's method and was interested but it's beyond my
expertise.  I may have a crack at it tonight or tomorrow.

I would rather install it separately like Ben advises but the ripper
programs I use call the default FLAC version and there appears to be no
way to change them.
