This is not normal. I've got thousands of Oggs here so your plan will work, it's just a matter of finding out what's wrong.
Look at /var/log/slimserver.log or /tmp/slimserver.log, wherever that log is stored on your system. There may be some errors located there. Also: I'm assuming your Ogg album is not already in the database in a different format? SlimServer may not deal gracefully with duplicates.
