The priority setting relative to other processes. So a high priority
process gets more CPU time than a lower priority process. It will not
improve performance of any process in itself, just allocate more
available CPU time when that is scarce.

What are the other processes running on that machine? i.e. does the 
machine have enough grunt? a good way of checking this is the response
times to Softsqueeze menu changes. 

If people are experiencing drop-outs, you might want to check the
network. The streams can take quite a bit of bandwidth, and that should
be multiplied by every person listening at a particular time. you could
consider higher buffer settings (I believe you can set this in
Softsqueeze). I would not recommend limiting bitrates using LAME. This
costs a lot of CPU time.
