The database is a mysql server that is either started by slimserver or 
created on the mysql server already running on your system.
You shouldn't be allowed to save playlists using the slimserver 
interface if you don't have a playlist folder set up. Only the current 
playlists are stored with no playlist folder.
How did you save the other playlists if you have them?

As for where is best, whereever you want them.  Avoid using the music 
folder as a playlist location (it causes the scanner to get sensitive) 
and make sure that whatever folder you point to has write permissions 
for the 'slimserver' user.
