I'm seeing strange things trying to get my Japanese characters working
as well.. (on a knoppmyth box)

I've enabled the en_US.UTF-8 locale and charmap,
forced slimserver to use LC_CTYPE utf8,
transferred files using windows file sharing,
the ARIALUNI.TTF font is loaded properly as reported by debugging,
and everything seems to be working
EXCEPT if my formatting is set to FILE.EXT

tags show up properly, and browsing music folder looks good, but if I
add a song to the play list then the now playing screen on the right
looks like accented ascii instead of the proper glyphs.
I suppose the easy fix would be to use something besides FILE.EXT for
formatting..
but I'm still curious whats going on

could it be I need to change MySQL to use utf8 as well?
