I would guess that mounting the usb drive to a directory within your login will do the job. If you create the directory in your desktop then mount the usb to that directory i think that will have the permissions OK.
If not then chmod command will do the job on the usb directory.such as sudo chmod 777 /media/store/ With the above a secondary hdd is mounted as store. In my machine this is an internal sata HDD.
