OK, so I've determined the connection problem is the firewall.  For some
reason System/Administration/Firewall and SELinux doesn't actually take
down the firewall, even though there's the button that says "Disable
Firewall".  Stopping the iptables services actually does bring down the
firewall, allowing the connection.  Now I just need to amend my iptables
chains manually--anyone got any advice on that?

Still don't understand why I can't run in daemon mode.
